.ATM or FI?

Feldenkrais® work is done in two formats: Awareness Through Movement® lessons and Functional Integration® lessons. Awareness Through Movement is usually taught in a group: the teacher verbally leads students through a series of comfortable, easy movements that gradually increase in range and complexity. Lessons are given in many positions, including lying on the floor, kneeling, standing or sitting in a chair or on the floor. These movement explorations utilize thinking, sensing, moving and imagining as tools for improving human functioning. You can hear free recordings of ATM lessons at the website of the OpenATM Project.

Functional Integration® lessons are given one on one and include the teacher gentling moving the student, who typically lies on a table, fully clothed. Each lesson is individualized for the needs and curiosity of the student at that moment in time. The lessons are relaxing, gentle, and comfortable.

Both Awareness Through Movement and Functional Integration are about learning. The student discovers new ways of approaching the simple activities of daily life and awakens his or her full potential for vital, embodied living.
